Jerry John Ouner (né Nutor), PhD is an associate professor at University of California, San Francisco. As a nurse scientist trained in Ghana and the United States, Dr. Ouner works with nurses and other healthcare professionals in multiple African countries. He is a 2023 Fellow of the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program. Dr. Ouner has held several leadership positions and have advocated for the nursing profession at different levels throughout his training and career as a nurse scientist both in Ghana and the United States. His passion for global health and advocacy for the nursing profession prepared him to represent Sigma at the United Nations.
Dr. Ouner is passionate about promoting collaboration between scholars and researchers working in Africa and North America. He is the founder and secretary general of Africa Interdisciplinary Health Conference (AfIHC). He founded AfIHC to create a platform for various healthcare professionals in both clinical and academic/research settings to meet and discuss their research findings to promote evidence-based practices related to the health sector in Africa. He has received several awards and recognitions that reflect his accomplishments and contributions to the field of nursing, global health and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Dr. Ouner's research interests are in global health, specifically, in maternal and child health and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. He is also interested in understanding the impact of environmental, social and economic factors on the health of women and children with particular focus on HIV/AIDS in low resources countries and among minority populations in the United States. Dr. Ouner has published extensively in high impact factor journals. He mentors nurses and other healthcare professionals across multiple countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.
Dr. Ouner is a registered nurse with PhD in Nursing Science from Drexel University and a postdoctoral training in Global Health and Health Policy from Princeton University. He holds a Master of Science in Nursing and Health-Care Leadership, a degree he obtained from University of California, Davis. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at University of Cape Coast (Ghana).
